Bears Extend Orton...What Are They Thinking?
The Chicago Bears and quarterback Kyle Orton agreed Monday on a one-year contract extension that runs through the 2009 season, setting up a competition between him and Rex Grossman. In three seasons, Orton is 12-6 as a starter and has the fourth-highest winning percentage among Bears quarterbacks with at least 16 starts since 1961. He spent most of last season as the third-stringer behind Grossman and Brian Griese, and had mixed results while starting the final three games. Orton was 43 of 80 with 478 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The Bears won two of three, but finished a disappointing 7-9 after winning the NFC championship the previous year. My Take: This is an awful move by the Bears management. They have re-signed two of there three quarterbacks, all which are sub-par players, and are most likely not going to try to bring in a free agent quarterback. The Bears management think that they can win with either of these quarterbacks and they are going to set them up for a competition this off-season. The Bears will most likely draft a quarterback, but the signing of the two QBs mean that they will most likely use one of their later picks to do so. Maybe Hawaii QB Colt Brennan? Don't expect the Bears to make any trades for a QB like Donovan McNabb...what are the Bears thinking?

I think this is a solid move on the Bears part. Orton has been solid for the Bears, and will make for a solid third string behind whoever they draft. I think right now, it is more important that they take offensive line, but then go to QB. What were they thinking you ask-just depth.
Solid sign her, don't know about Grossman signing but it is what it is. Grossman is a proven winner if he can just hold on to the ball? Frankly I think the guy is gun shy standing behind the line. Oreton deserves a shot at starting and a commitment of playing time!
Don't know if drafting a QB is the answer, surely Colt can certainly make the game more entertainment but without a offensive line or a running back, forget passing.
Although the Bears have an excellent defense, surely they gotten tired being on the field too long.
So with said, bring a good running back and fix the offensive line. Bring back Rivera and cut down some of Lovey's resposibility. Here you can tell he had too much!!
There are no free agent QB’s available and McNabb is not available. They had no choice. Grossman has shown flashes good and bad. Orton played better than say. After all, he played in that terrible -20 weather in one of those games. Orton is at least a serviceable, young, winning back-up with 3 years in the system. The draft is where they’ll go but it’s weak for QB’s.
The QBs in the draft are well below average. The Bears have little choice but to resign these two average fellows. It's basically an ok move given the market forces that currently prevail. Perhaps they can develop someone down the line.
Let me ask this question...if you were the GM of the Chicago Bears would you have re-signed grossman and orton or would you draft a quarterback first round/trade for a qb. If you were going to draft a QB who would you draft and if you would trade for a QB what would be your trade?
