Cowboys Sign LB Thomas

Linebacker Zach Thomas is headed home to Texas to play for the Dallas Cowboys in the state where he was a high school and college standout before 12 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. Thomas has reached an agreement on a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cowboys, agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Saturday night. Thomas, a seven-time Pro Bowler who missed much of last season because of concussions and migraines, has already taken a physical for the Cowboys. “It is going to be signed in the next couple of days,” Rosenhaus said. The deal includes a $1 million base salary, a $1 million signing bonus and a $1 million incentive-based bonus based on playing time that Rosenhaus said should be easily attained.

Cowboys Tag Hamlin

The Dallas Cowboys designated Ken Hamlin their franchise player on Thursday, locking up the Pro Bowl safety through at least next season. The move essentially means Hamlin has a one-year contract at the average base salary of the top five safeties in the NFL: $4.4 million. It also keeps the unrestricted free agent off the market and extends the window to negotiate a long-term contract. Hamlin made his first Pro Bowl during the Cowboys’ 13-3 season. He finished with 62 tackles and five interceptions, one behind team leader Anthony Henry.

Keyshawn Johnson Comeback?

Former NFL wide receiver and current TV analyst Keyshawn Johnson is reportedly looking to return to the NFL this year after taking a year off. According to Johnson he's been working out regularly and is still in great shape. He was a three-time pro bowler with 10,571 career yards. In 2006 when he played for the Panthers he had 70 catches for 815 yards and 4 touchdowns. Johnson could be a great steal for a team that is looking for an experienced player. Cowboys To Start Serious Talks With Barber

Drew Rosenhaus, agent for Marion Barber, said he plans to meet with the Dallas Cowboys this week at the NFL scouting combine. The Cowboys have said they would like to sign the standout running back to a long-term deal the Dallas Morning News reported. Dallas is expected to give Barber, a restricted free agent, a $2.562 million tender, which would require another team to fork over first- and third-round picks to get him. The Cowboys value Barber as the future at running back, especially after he earned his first Pro Bowl berth despite not starting a regular-season game. Thomas Headed To Dallas?

Zach Thomas grew up in Pampa, Texas, went to Texas Tech and despite calling Miami home for the last 12 years still considers himself a Texan. According to two sources, the Dallas Cowboys have had discussions with Thomas' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about bringing the veteran linebacker in for a visit after the NFL scouting combine concludes Feb. 26 the Dallas Morning News reported. The Dolphins released Thomas on Thursday in a salary-cap move as new executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells looks to rebuild a team that went 1-15 in 2007. Thomas played in only five games last season because of the effects of a concussion and failed to reach 100 tackles for the first time in his 12-year career. Garrett Stays With Cowboys

After looking into two coaching jobs, Jason Garrett decided to remain offensive coordinator of the Cowboys after Dallas made him the highest-paid assistant coach in the NFL. The Cowboys promoted Garrett to assistant head coach and gave him a new contract that will pay him in the ballpark of $3 million per year, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting. Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips' salary is also in the $3 million range. There is no word on whether the team plans to adjust Phillips' salary. Garrett went through second interviews in Baltimore and Atlanta earlier this week, then returned to Dallas to meet with team owner Jerry Jones.

T.O. Cries Defending Romo

Terrell Owens isn't blaming this loss on Tony Romo, Jessica Simpson or their controversial trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last weekend. The wide receiver broke down in tears while defending his quarterback after the Giants stunned the Cowboys, 21-17, at Texas Stadium Sunday. "This is not about Tony," a choked-up Owens said as tears welled up behind his designer sunglasses. "You guys can point the finger at him, you can talk about the vacation and if you do that, it is really unfair. It's really unfair. That is my teammate. That is my quarterback. And if you guys do that, it is unfair. We lost as a team. We lost as a team, man."

Giants Won't Fall For Cowboy's Tricks

The New York Daily News reported Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Ownes didn't come close to practicing Wednesday, and coach Wade Phillips, who didn't even set eyes on his star wideout, could offer little hope that he will be able to suit up, a signal the New York Giants interpreted as pure and simple smoke. As defensive end Justin Tuck put it, they are not buying the head fake. "He will play," Tom Coughlin said. "There is no doubt in my mind he will play." Source: New York Daily News
